Common Problems

I installed the script, but when I try to create a gallery, I get Fatal error: Call to undefined function: curl_init().

This error indicates that PHP has not been compiled with CURL support. Most servers have the libcurl library installed, but PHP must also be compiled with support for it. We require the Client URL libraries for a number of functions and no gallery can be created in Arylia without it.

If you do not have any web host management software installed on your server, you need to recompile PHP manually. Check this page and this page for information on compiling PHP with CURL support.

If you have WebHost Manager (often referred to as WHM) you can install PHP's CURL functionality by following these steps:

Log into WHM.
In the "Software" section, select "Apache Update".
Click the button labeled "Load Previous Config" (VERY IMPORTANT).
Check the box labeled "Curl (Version #.##.#)"
Click "Start Build"

The build process will take 5-10 minutes, so be patient. When it's finished, CURL's PHP functions should be ready to use.

I tried to rip a gallery, but it didn't work.

The first thing you should do is try again, and double-check every setting. We make the same mistakes, so before we go any further, check the settings you used to retrieve the gallery and make sure you picked everything right.

Here are a few common mistakes:

Forgetting to enter HTTP Authentication, or entering the wrong one. One sponsor in particular has a different login for their content area; since Arylia is retrieving content, it needs the password for the content area!
Selecting the wrong option when images are on their own HTML pages. Always make sure that the URL ends in .jpg when ripping images that are directly linked.

When I try to create a gallery I get Warning: shell_exec() has been disabled for security reasons.

This can happen for a couple of different reasons:

PHP is running in safe mode.
The function has been disabled manually.

Either of these issues can be fixed by editing your php.ini file to disable safe mode or enable the function.

Arylia says that my gallery exists, but it isn't in the list.

When you tell Arylia to create a gallery, the first thing it does is create the folder. From that point, a lot of things can go wrong, and when they do Arylia can't always get back and delete the folder. So the empty folder gets left behind and the database record is never inserted. We may solve this problem at some point in the future, but for now the fix is just to log in to your server and delete the folder manually.

When I try to install the script for the first time, nothing happens.

This means there is something wrong with the database you're using. Most of the time we see this error it's actually an old version of MySQL. Make sure you are using at least version 4.1 of MySQL (we suggest 5 if possible, since we've noticed some considerable optimization improvements on our own projects).

What is a "fusker"?

When we built this we thought fusker had gained enough ubiquity for it to be understood. Otherwise we'd have provided more documentation. See fusker (wikipedia) for a detailed explanation.

There are a couple of important things to note about this, however:

Arylia only supports "simple" fuskers, meaning just one set of square brackets and containing only numbers. For instance, "http://www.example.com/folder[1-10]/img[01-05].jpg" will not work correctly.
Arylia will attempt to detect the "zero fill" settings of the gallery based on your entry. For instance, if you enter "http://www.example.com/[1-20].jpg" arylia will look for 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg, etc. But if you enter "http://www.example.com/[01-20].jpg" Arylia will look for 01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg, etc. Be sure to check whether the gallery you are ripping in this manner has leading zeroes.

When I try to create a gallery from a zip file, the gallery is empty.

There are two main causes for this behavior:

Your PHP installation is not configured to accept file uploads, or it has a size restriction on the files it accepts. Create a phpinfo page and look in the "Local value" column for the following three settings:
- upload_max_filesize - should be larger than the largest zip file you plan to upload.
- post_max_size - should be at least 2M larger than upload_max_filesize.
- file_uploads - should be set to On.
If all of these are set correctly, read on...
Your server may not have decompression utilities or they may not be accessible from your web server's path. Log in through a secure shell (SSH) and type "unzip". If it tells you the command is not found, you need to install it. If it gives you usage instructions, you need to find the executable and make sure it's in a location and that it has permissions that will allow your webserver to execute it. Your server provider should be able to assist you with this, or if you trust us with your server's root password, we can too.
